The Happy Witch Project: Shining a Light on your Shadow Self

When I started my 28 Days of Self Love challenge, I expected February to be a fun month of self-care practices to help me progress on my path of healing. What I didn’t expect was the emotional rollercoaster I went through.

Focusing on what makes you happy also forces you to acknowledge what makes you unhappy.

I had to face my shadows in ways that really shook me, battling the hissing voices in my head whispering those ugly words-

“You’re not good enough”

 You’re body’s not fit enough”

“You’ve wasted your life.”

Doing all the cute little self-love activities helped take my mind off those voices but they didn’t entirely erase them. Maybe that’s the ugly truth about self-love. It’s not all butterflies & rainbows. Sometimes self-love is the ability to love yourself through the icky grime that rears its ugly head from time to time.

My shadow self was the mean girl I always avoided. She picked at every insecurity, kicked me when I was down, and made me feel like I was unworthy of self-love. She was a bully. She made me feel like giving up on myself was the only option. And that’s what bullies do- isolate & destroy. I had been bullied so much the past couple of years that I began to bully myself.

Everyone has their own shadows. You can’t outrun them. You can’t hide from them. But you also can’t hide within them. There’s only one way to handle shadows- you face them.

Instead of listening to the whispers and accepting them for fact, I asked myself questions.

“Why do I think I’m not good enough? Is it because I’m comparing myself to others who are more successful? Didn’t they have to start somewhere as well?”

“Why am I so hard on my body? Am I really not fit or am I holding myself to an impossible standard of beauty that society has forced upon me?”

“What defines a wasted life? Lack of money? Lack of status? Do those things really matter in the end?”

The answers to these questions were obvious. I learned how to challenge my inner mean girl and put that sheisty bitch in her place!

Now when I hear those whispers stirring, I turn on the spotlight and take a closer look. I guess that’s the thing with shadows- once you’re brave enough to shine a light on them, they disappear.

Blessed Be, happy witches!

Once Upon a Time- Create your own Fairy Tale

Ever since I was a little girl, I loved the word- create. Every school assignment that began with that word excited me. It was a chance to express myself through words, stories, drawings, paintings & crafts. As a quiet introverted child, being creative was my only form of self-expression.

I truly love the feeling I get from creating something special, tapping into the artistic part of my brain and exploring the depths of my imagination.

Creativity has always been my saving grace- the one thing I love about myself without any shadow of a doubt. No matter what I see in the mirror, no matter how much money I make, no matter how many friends I have- being creative is the one thing I’m always confident about.

Not to say, what I create is always amazing. It’s simply the act of creation that counts. The happiness it brings. The strange balance of excitement and serenity it gives me.

Creativity is my self-love.

One of the #28DaysofSelfLove activities was to write a fairy tale about yourself beginning with Once Upon a Time. This idea of writing my own fairy tale came to me last year at the lowest time of my life, when I felt like my day-to-day life was destroying me. Like Alice, I wanted an escape from reality and I created my very own Wonderland.

Like most fairytales, my story had the major archetypes- the Evil Queen and her henchmen, a period of trials & tribulations, a knight in shining armor and the inner-strength of the heroine who made it through the dark forest to find her own happily ever after.

I was writing a fairy tale which mirrored my daily life and somehow manifested my fantasy into reality. With the help of my knight in shining armor and a few fairy godmothers, I made it through the woods. Unfortunately, I didn’t defeat the Evil Queen in real life… but I also didn’t let her defeat me either.

If you’re going through something difficult in your life, try this activity out. Create a world where you have the strength to defeat your dragon or outwit the Evil Queen. Make it a poem, a painting, a script- whatever form of expression you feel most comfortable with.

Having trouble getting started? Ask yourself a few of these questions.

Are you a maiden, a princess, a witch, a fairy or other magickal creature?

Where do you live? A castle, a cottage, a tree, etc?

Do you have any magickal powers?

Do you have any magickal friends? Dwarves, elves, nymphs, animals, fairy godmothers, etc?

Have you been cursed? If so, how does it affect your story and how do you overcome it?

How does your fairy tale end and your happily ever after begin?

The story above is somewhat of a Chapter One in my tale. I hope you enjoy it & I hope this activity offers you the same healing and release it has offered me.

Happy Creating!

Blessed Be.

Self Love Potion

In the beginning of 28 Days of Self Love, I wrote about my Self Love Potion which is essentially a fruit smoothie blended with the intent of self-love & sensuality.

Traditionally potions are water or alcohol-based liquids mixed with fruits & herbs in a cauldron to manifest magickal effects for anyone who drinks it.

I love brewing in cauldrons but I don’t limit my magick to the traditional pagan tools. I see no problem with using household appliances to prepare potions & infusions.

In this case, the ordinary blender is our cauldron and a simple fruit smoothie recipe transforms into a magickal potion of self-love.

Vanilla Almond Milk

Vanilla -Vanilla planifolia-

Vanilla induces feelings of love & stimulates lust.

Almond -Prunus communis-

Almond promotes any spiritual healing needed to forgo the pain of past incidents which have hindered your ability to love yourself.

Spinach- Spinacea oleracea

Spinach is jam-packed with vitamins, antioxidants & minerals for our Divine Temples which makes it a wonderful self-love ingredient. Not to mention it increases our general prosperity. Woohoo!

Strawberries- Fragaria vesca

Strawberries promote a flirty sense of romantic love.

Blueberries- Vaccinium corymbosum

Blueberries provide protection, especially when under psychic attack. Bullies and all-around haters can be poisonous to someone on the path to self-love. Unfortunately, sometimes in life we must come in contact with such poison on a day-to-day basis whether at school or in our work environment. Blueberries help build a protective shield, guarding you from the inside out.

Mangos- Mangifera indica

Mangos also provide protection and increases sexual desire, awakening our inner-sensuality.

Banana- Musa acuminate

Bananas awaken a sense of spiritual love & thanks to its phallic shape, it also stimulates sexual stamina.

Chia Seeds- Salvia hispanica

Chia seeds provide sustenance, good health & protection.

Honey- Apis mellifera

Honey is perfect for all kinds of attraction & passion, as it is the favorite offering for love goddess like Aphrodite and Oshun. It is also used in solar magick to promote self-confidence and a higher self-esteem.

The last ingredient for this potion is Intent. Without intent, this smoothie is simply a delicious drink filled with healthy vitamins and nutrients.

  1. Lay out your ingredients and your blender on your counter to be cleansed and consecrated.
  2. Ground & center yourself, then build your personal power from within, visualizing your solar plexus or your heart chakra beginning to glow brightly.
  3. Once you feel your personal power has reached its peak, push this cleansing energy out of your hands and blast away any negativity from your ingredients. Grasp your blender and visualizing it glowing with this energy. See it in your mind’s eye as a cauldron, boiling and bubbling within the hearth of your heart.
  4. Enchant your fruits and vegetables by running your fingers through or over each ingredient. I like to chant its name in Latin, building up my personal power and connecting with the plants’ special magickal gifts. For example, as I hold the strawberries I repeat “Fragaria vesca”, visualizing a pink or red glow emanating from them, feeling their romantic, loving vibrations.
  5. As you add each ingredient, visualize tossing them in your hearth’s cauldron. Try to imagine the heat of the crackling fire and the sounds of the bubbling brew.
  6. Say a little prayer, chant, affirmation or mantra that speaks of your wish to conjure self love. Visualize yourself looking into the mirror and loving what you see. Imagine going about your day and doing everything with love. See yourself projecting and accepting the divine gift of love.
  7. Finally, push down on the blend button and as the blender loudly mixes the ingredients together, grasp the top of the blender and connect to the electric vibrations literally pulsating in your hands.

Pour the potion into a glass and go to a place that brings you happiness and serenity. Sip the potion slowly, enjoy the flavors. Self-love requires slowing down to truly connect with yourself and enjoy your own company.

Give this Self Love Potion a try or craft one of your own and prepare to feel absolutely & positively- lovely!

Blessed Be, beauties!

Makeup Magick: The Art of Beauty Alchemy

The beauty of a woman must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. –Audrey Hepburn

I love practical magick!

No, I’m not talking about the movie- although, what witch doesn’t love Sally & Gilly Owens. Am I right?

By practical magick, I mean the type of magick we do in our day-to-day lives in practical ways, such as the act of enchanting our morning cup of coffee with a specific purpose or drawing sigils on the bottom of our shoes for magickal support with every step we take.

My favorite form of practical magick is Makeup Magick, otherwise known as Beauty Alchemy. The very definition of alchemy is- a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination.

In some ways, beauty gurus and makeup artists could be seen as beauty alchemists because they understand makeup truly is an art of transformation.

However we witches know just how to take it a few steps further!

Everything done during a Beauty Ritual can have deep spiritual significance through the power of symbolism and intention-setting.

These are few of the ways I’ve blended magick into my morning makeup routine.

As you wash your skin of any residual dirt and debris, visualize the water washing away spiritual debris as well. Let it cleanse you of any negative thoughts or emotions. My skin tonic contains antioxidant-rich white tea which offers magickal properties such as purification, protection and blessings of new beginnings. As I’ve gotten older, my skin has become quite dry so I’m more drawn to face oils for hydration. My face oil has a blend of almond, sunflower and safflower oils. Almonds are great for wisdom & prosperity, sunflower helps build a healthy ego and safflower aids in psychic development. If I have a crucial day ahead of me, I sometimes use the oil to draw a sigil or rune on my forehead, anointing myself with its specific power.

As I stipple liquid foundation onto my skin, I think about my inner foundation of love and grace. Without a solid foundation within, the most beautiful person in the world could crumble under the pressures of outside criticism. It’s important to solidify what’s of true value because you may come across people throughout the day who see your beauty and look for ways to diminish it.

No one’s perfect. Everyone has those annoying little flaws to deal with- dark circles, uneven skin tone, blemishes, etc. But the imperfections don’t stop at the skin’s surface. We all have those inner demons we try to hide- jealousy, laziness, anger, self-hate. That’s what makes us human and it’s important to remember our shadow selves make us who we are. So I don’t ignore mine or deny their existence, but I try not to let them consume me either. As I apply the concealer to my outer flaws, I take the time to acknowledge the flaws with me… then blend, blend, blend them bitches away! 😉

Typically powder is used to set our base makeup, preventing it from smudging and budging throughout the day. But as we set our powder we can also set our intentions for the day ahead. As you whirl your face brush over your powder, visualize picking up all the energy and vibrations you’ll need to accomplish your goals. As you tap of the excess, see yourself honing the right balance of those vibrations. Then finally as you sweep the powder across your face, look yourself in the eye and make a silent promise to not budge on those goals.

Eyeshadow allows you to use color magick in so many different and fun ways.

Play with some cool blue eyeshadow to experience inner harmony and peace.

Get mysterious with plum or purple hues and open yourself to new psychic & magickal abilities.

Need a little money in your life? Try various shades of green and connect with Mother’s Earth’s abundance.

Feeling frisky? Play with flirty pink shadows and awaken your inner sex-kitten.

Sometimes I dot a bit of gold to my tear duct and call upon the God for success and confidence. If I need to feel the Goddess’s energies, I can apply champagne or silver eyeshadow to highlight my inner-eye instead.

If I know I’m going to be interacting with some unpleasant people that day, I can apply a black smoky eye to ward off their negativity- not to mention, walk in that joint lookin’ like a badass witch!

If you’re like me and typically opt for more neutral tones like browns, re-establish your own color associations- it’s all about intent!

Here are a few other ideas to make more out of your beauty products:

Bronzer for the happy, confidant energies of the Sun.

Highlighter to highlight your inner sparkle and showcase your best qualities.

Blush to tap into your fun, sensual side.

Eyeliner & Mascara to protect yourself from mal de ojo or the Evil Eye.

Lipgloss & Lipstick to make your words shine and really resonate well with those you speak to.

A Beauty Ritual can be done every Friday or on the full moon to enchant your cosmetics with power.

Light I pink candle on your Beauty Altar and lay out all of your products. Begin by grounding and centering yourself, maybe with an Aphrodite or Hathor Meditation. Feel your personal vibrations growing, connecting with your Divine Femininity and when you’re ready, push your intention into each item one by one.

Want even more power? Craft a magickal Beauty Oil to anoint your makeup bag or keep a special Beauty Sachet wherever you store your makeup.

How do you put magick into your Beauty Routine? Let me know!

Blessed Be, gorgeous witches!

A Witches Beauty Altar

Ah, the bewitching power of makeup.

As little girls, we remember the feeling of watching our mothers apply their makeup up at their vanities, covered with various lotions and potions to enhance their natural beauty.

The image of a woman at her vanity evokes a very powerful sense of elegance, beauty and sensuality. I conjure up visions of Jean Harlow in her silk robe or Dita Von Teese applying her signature red lipstick.

Most women apply their cosmetics in very a ritualistic manner without even realizing it. Makeup brushes transform into wands and the vanity becomes an Altar of Beauty where we gaze at our reflection with the intention of transformation, self-confidence and of course- self love.

The energy built at this Altar of Beauty sets the tone for the entire day. We’re able connect with our Divine Femininity, creating shimmery pink energy swirls, spinning and twirling around us as we delicately prim & polish.

Ancient Egyptians understood the alchemy of makeup. Black kohl and other cosmetic minerals were used around the eyes to not only protect themselves from the sun’s glare, eye diseases and insects- but to also ward off evil spirits.

Prehistoric cosmetic palettes, not that far off from those you’d see in Sephora, date as far back as 5000 BC. Hathor, the golden Goddess of Beauty, ruled the world of cosmetics- an art Ancient Egyptians regarded as a sign of holiness.

My Beauty Altar is set up every morning in front of my bedroom window complete with my trusty Rose Quartz, a tealight which sits inside my pink Himalayan salt candle holder and seashells to represent Aphrodite, whom reminds us that every woman is beautiful and worthy of self-love.

I also have an Aphrodite Altar on a large bookshelf in the Feng Shui Relationship Corner of my bedroom, adorned with her various images, rose petals, pink candles, and turtle doves to represent faithful love.

We are in the second week of my 28 Days of Love project and I’m proud to report a deeper appreciation for all the love in my life. It’s helped me keep my head up through some shadow work, which has become quite dark.

I haven’t had to deal with my negative body image issues for years, because well- for years my body was super thin due to anxiety-related gastrointestinal issues. Now that I’m healthy again, I’ve gained weight in areas I’m not used to.

I’m by no means over-weight but I’ve come to feel incredibly uncomfortable in my own skin. So with my Aphrodite Meditations and Rose Quartz Healing, I’m hoping to change that mindset & appreciate my more womanly hips and thighs, repeating Maya Angelou’s Phenomenal Woman over and over in my head.

Are you participating in 28 Days of Love? If so, what have you been doing to love yourself more? Have you discovered something new about yourself or had to face any shadows along the way?

Leave a reply and let me know!

Blessed Be, lovelies!

28 Days of Self Love

The secret of attraction is to love oneself. –Deepak Chopra

During Yule, I set my intentions for each month of the year and my focus for February was, of course- Love. More specifically- Self Love.

As I mentioned in my Happy Witch Project post, I’m still on a path of healing and have decided to dedicate this entire month to crafting my happiness through self-love & self-care practices.

28 Days of Self Love will consist of loving every aspect of myself- mind, body and soul.

So, first things first- my body.

I spent most of last year hovered over a bucket vomiting due to the severe anxiety I had tried to suppress. I became very weak, weighing about 92 pounds with little to no energy and needless to say- my normal workout routine wasn’t much of an option. Now I’m stronger, healthier and have reclaimed my curves. After what my body had been through, I’m not gonna take my good health for granted.

My workouts are a combination of jump rope & elliptical cardio coupled with kettlebell training and Pilates. This month I’m going to push a little harder, go longer and enjoy the burn connecting with the elements with every breath I use to fuel my muscles.

I like to work out in nature as much as I can, breathing in the fresh air, absorbing the sun’s strengthening energy and gazing up at the trees as I lay on my yoga mat. I find focusing on the chirping birds and squirrels crawling up the trees helps take my mind off the pain of flexing, stretching and contracting.

I’m also becoming more mindful of what food I choose to put in my body. As witches, we see our bodies as Divine Temples and vessels of our spirit. As a Latina, it can be tempting to fill my stomach with the deliciousness that is Mexican food but this month my diet will consist of lighter options like fruits, vegetables and healthier meats like turkey and salmon.

I’ve crafted a simple Self Love Potion, which is essentially a smoothie using magickal household ingredients like flirtatious strawberries, love-inducing mangos and the banana for its sugary sweetness and… um, obvious phallic shape- which provides a touch of sensuality to the mix. I believe being in touch with your Sensual Self is essential to true self-love, as sexuality is a healthy expression of the spirit and part of a sacral chakra awakening. I’ll reveal more of the recipe in a future post and how I take it from a delicious smoothie to an elixir of love.

Nourishing my mind & soul is just as important as nourishing my body, so I’m getting back to basics with my magick and studying all the subjects I’ve wanted to reexamine and explore for some time now. My Book of Shadows had accidently been destroyed when I moved, so I’m taking this as a sign from the Universe to start from scratch with my knowledge and redefine my Craft in this new stage in my life.

I am also going to revisit the relationship I had with Aphrodite in my early twenties. Now that I’m in my early thirties, I feel like I’m better equipped to handle her mischievous, free-spirited nature without getting myself into too much trouble.

I’m also working more deeply with Rose Quartz this month- placing her under my pillow every night to see what she would like to reveal to me in my dreams and featuring her prominently on my altar which will be redesigned after Imbolc to represent all things Love.

So if you feel like you’re in need of some spiritual T.L.C, please join me on my 28 Days of Self Love and share what you are doing to love yourself more.

Blessed Be.
