Preparing for Mercury Retrograde

We’ve got another Mercury Retrograde on its way which means it’s time to keep an eye out on all communication, transportation, technology and travel plans. Some people take the go with the flow approach to Mercury Retro but I like to take extra precautions for myself and my loved ones.

First off, check up on your Mundane Maintenance.

Back up all important files on your computer.

Get a tune-up on your car.

Keep an eye out on your finances and try to stick to a budget.

Think before you speak.

Be very clear with your communication & correspondence at work.

Plan ahead but leave room for the unexpected.

This Mercury Retrograde I’m asking Jupiter for his assistance. I carved a candle with his symbol and dressed it with various oils and herbs, which I enchanted with my intentions of protection, happiness, good health, prosperity and love.

I chose some highly flammable oils so I decided to burn it in my cauldron and set it outside so the wind could take the smoke and jumpstart my magick immediately. Afterwards, I buried the remaining wax in the Earth right outside my property to keep its protective energies nearby and connected to me.

Mercury Retrograde Oils and Herbs

If you plan on working magick to protect yourself and your loved ones during this time, I urge you to choose herbs and oils that truly resonate with you. I chose a lot of protective, happy and lucky properties that happen to give off a fragrance I adore. Just inhaling the mixture puts me in a state of euphoria. If all you can find are the simple cooking herbs in your kitchen, toss ‘em in and charge your candle blend with whatever intentions you like. The key is Intention.

This month I intend on starting a new venture, which I usually avoid doing during Mercury Retrograde.

But I’m done holding off on my dreams.

And so, I decided to craft a Witches Bottle filled with items enchanted to remove obstacles, aid inspiration and boost my creativity.

After cleansing the bottle with white sage, I began filling it with my items. I chose the same herbs I used for my Mercury Retrograde candle and added a few others such as marjoram which is attributed to Jupiter and defends against bad luck. I also added various seeds such as chia, dill, coriander and basil to represent my venture at its infancy and its potential for growth.

This time of year is a great time to start new projects so I wanted to reflect Spring’s energy of new beginnings with beautiful bright flowers. My new beginning involved shedding my old skin and all the insecurities which held me back from really going after my dreams; so I added some snake skin to represent my transformation.

I also added garnet chips for its manifestation properties and blessings of success, creativity, inspiration and the self-confidence I need to accomplish my goals. Lastly, I blew into the bottle to add a piece of me before tightening the lid and setting it on my desk altar.

Witches Bottle

Every time I work on this new exciting venture, I will sit down at my desk and shake the bottle to reactivate its energies and remind myself that I’m in control my own destiny.

How are you preparing for Mercury Retrograde? Let me know!

Blessed Be, lovelies!

Preparing for Wolf Moon Magick

January’s Esbat celebrates the virtue of perseverance as we struggle to endure the remainder of these cold winter months before spring.

That is, unless you live in the south and are enjoying sunny days with temperatures in the mid-70’s. I swear, our weather has been so chaotic. Last week we had an arctic blast. This week I’m rocking my cut-off shorts.

In Native American culture tonight’s moon is known as the Wolf Moon representing the hungry wolf prowling through the cold forest, howling at the glistening sky.

The Wolf Moon offers blessings of inner-strength, protection and survival, reminding us of the wolf’s strength during times of winter hardship.

Tonight I’ll be using that energy to enhance my first magickal working in 2017.

The focus for my magick will be protection & prosperity and I’ll be using two elements known for their powers of manifestation- fire and earth.

Earth is great for rituals involving growth, material gain and money, while Fire is often used in workings involving success, strength and protection.

But before I perform any ritual or spell, I like to cleanse and consecrate my tools and ingredients with the Elements.

Representing the element of Spirit, I keep a soapstone pentacle on my working altar as a beacon of my spirituality and the faith I have in my magick.

For the remaining four I choose to combine my elements into groups of two. Fire and Air become one with my cinnamon incense, which I chose for its protective and abundance properties. Earth and Water unite to make a holy water of pine and lavender- both lovely purifying herbs.

To cleanse the items, I stir my herbal holy water with a pine wand I had clipped from my Pine Harvesting and sprinkle each tool and ingredient with it. As I do so, I visualize all negativity being washed away.

To consecrate my ingredients, I set my intentions for their magickal purposes by holding them over and through the incense smoke, while visualizing my desired end result.

Once that’s done I can begin on preparing my spell items for tonight’s ritual.

I have made a candle dressing of money-drawing basil and obstacle-removing lemongrass for my oil base, mixing it with pine for prosperity and adding catnip to attract and draw those blessings of abundance into my life.

It took me a while to grind the catnip and pine with my mortar and pestle before I added them to the oils. The catnip crushed beautifully but the pine didn’t break up so easily. You could use a coffee grinder if you’d like, in fact many witches do for heartier herbs. But I like to put a lil’ elbow grease in my mixtures. I feel like the harder I grind the more time I have to set my intentions and put my personal power into it.

Once mixed, I massage the herbs onto the candle, pulling their energies from both ends of the candle and bringing them towards the middle. Admittedly, this is a messy process but that’s all part of the fun of being a witch.

Normally, I would mix the essential oils with some sort of base oil but I am fresh out at the moment. So I will be extra careful in lighting my candle tonight, as essential oils can be extremely flammable.

With that being said, I confess to being a bit of a pyromaniac. One of my absolute favorite ways to witch is burning petitions. I did so with my family on New Year’s and I enjoy doing it on special nights like tonight.

Using my flickering dressed candle to light the petitions, I will watch them burn safely in my fireproof cauldron while sitting under the Wolf Moon next to my crystals and tarot cards, absorbing her glorious energy and feeling an abundance of gratitude for the blessings already granted and those yet to come.

Merry Esbat!

‘Tis the Season of Pine

With Yule rapidly approaching, it’s time to connect with the season’s popular winter symbol- pine.

Pine represents life, strength, protection, purification, abundance and love. The pine tree was thought to be the only tree to survive the Ice Age and continues to flourish through the harshest of winters, which is why pine too represents perseverance and is commonly used to help one endure through difficult times.

But it also has many other magickal gifts to offer.

Pine Purification

Everyone knows about spring cleaning but winter time is also wonderful for purification, especially as we enter the New Year.

Forgo the harsh “faux-pine” floor cleaner and create your own natural floor wash using Martha Stewart’s Floor Cleaner recipe from her Clean Green: Natural Cleaning Products piece on her website. Martha calls for 10 drops of your choice essential oil in this recipe and pine is the perfect option to take this mixture from domestic-diva status- into pagan pine purification perfection! Simply set your intention and wash away the negativity.

Hanging pine is also a common magickal practice. Pine branches hung over the bed help to keep illnesses away and heal the sick. It can be hung over the front door or used as decoration within the home to ensure good health and joy for its inhabitants.

If you have a nifty aromatherapy oil diffuser, you can also diffuse pine essential oil within the air and fill the home with pure vibrations and its signature fresh scent. Of course, if you are more traditional and prefer the woodier scent of burning incense, there are many pine incense sticks, cones and resins to choose from, which also offer assistance with divination, money, healing and even exorcism.

To prepare for Yule rituals, craft a simple bath sachet of pine needles for deep spiritual cleansing before the festivities begin.

Pine Protection

I decorate my Yule altar with pine cones and pine branches to pay homage to the Winter Solstice and ward off any evil and negative energy. Burning pine needles in the cauldron fire offers even more spiritual protection.

Pine Prosperity

I also like to toss a few pine needles into the fireplace and watch the crackling fire spark as the needles scorch in its flames. As it burns I ask for the blessings of prosperity in the coming year.

A simple spell could be crafted by crushing up pine needles with a mortar and pestle while chanting a money incantation and then sprinkling the powder within your wallet or using it to dress a money candle. Many money incantations can be found online but I choose to write my own, connecting with my own creativity and personal magick.

How do you celebrate the season with pine? Leave me a reply and let me know!

Blessed be and Merry Yule!

xoxo
